My latest Minecraft project, the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge.
The bridge is about 500 blocks long, I'll make separate uploads from many angles of the bridge. This bridge is very, very long!
Scale is about 1:9 of the real bridge.
Bridge is about 80% complete. Will line six lanes of rails to make it a true bridge for transportation.
Currently the world's longest suspension bridge, the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge connects the Japanese islands of Honshu from Kobe to Akashi Island to Iwaya. This magnificent bridge is a massive engineering triumph, seen as the ultimate evolution of bridge design & technology, a far cry from the simple, Roman arched bridge.
The bridge had to meet strict requirements before construction, not only did it have to be strong enough to withstand storms & typhoons, but earthquakes as well. Japan is especially prone to earthquakes, so the technological challenges were immense given the scale on which the bridge is to be built.
Construction began in 1988 with the design finalized to be the longest in the world. The two towers holding up the cables are almost as tall as the Eiffel Tower, And if one were to lay the bridge cables, the length of the cables are long enough to circle the world's equator seven times. The bridge spans four kilometers, with six lanes of traffic going both ways
As well as the engineering involved, the cost of the bridge was staggering; estimates say that the bridge cost 500 billion yen. The bridge was completed in 1998 & opened to traffic the same year
The Earthquake that hit Kobe in 1995 was a test of the bridge's design, & even Kobe was badly damaged, the bridge stood undamaged, with the epicenter of the earthquake occuring between the bridge's two towers.
This bridge is one of the world's greatest triumphs in scale of design & aesthetic, spanning in a region where nature can show it's worst, the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge is a wonder of the world.
