The Candelaria Church is a historic church located in the former Brazilian capital of Rio De Janeiro. Belonging to the Roman Catholic denomination of Christianity, this church is one of Rio De Janeiro's, if not one of Brazil's most beautiful churches, but also stands as a monument to the Brazilian people from the foundation of the Brazilian nation.

Christianity was introduced to Brazil in the 1500's with the arrival of Portuguese settlers & missionaries who spread the gospel throughout the country: at this time, missionaries from Spain & Portugal had managed to convert the local populations of the South American continent with great success, though this was a ruthless & systematic indoctrination condemning those who clung to their old pantheons of gods before the arrival of the Europeans. Regardless, this mass conversion of Latin America heralded a new era for the continent, & established Spain & Portugal as colonial powers.

Rio De Janeiro was founded in 1565 by Portuguese settlers & they were quick to establish the city as a major colonial hub for their holdings in South America. One of their greatest architectural legacies was the Candelaria Church, or Igreja Nossa Senhora da Candelária in Portuguese. Before the church we see today, a small chapel stood on the site where the church occupies. The new church was to be built mainly in the Baroque style with some Neo-Classical features mainly in the facade. The name comes from a legend that holds a ship named Candelária which sank in a storm. The new church was to be larger & more magnificent than it's predecessor with work starting in 1775.

The facade is a beautiful mix of Baroque & Neo-Classical styles blended together in harmony after being worked on for nearly 40 years. The rest of the church went through a number of reforms & redesigns during its construction with the dome being worked on in 1856. The dome, which is built from limestone imported from Portugal, made the church the tallest structure in Brazil. It's beauty isn't restricted to the exterior: the interior is lavishly decorated with marble columns, the material being imported from Italy, the dome features exquisite art telling the tale of Antônio de Palmas, the missionary on board the doomed Candelária ship as a gratitute, & Renaissance-style features. The church was completed after many more modifications & opened in 1898.

The church became the site of a massacre on July 23rd 1993 where eight children by the military police as they slept in the vicinity of the church. The massacre drew worldwide attention from the world's media. The event is still an emotional subject amongst Brazilians today.

The Church holds regular services daily & is open to the wider public to visit. It is a popular tourist attraction in the city and, despite the declining numbers of Catholics in Brazil, this church will remain an endearing monument to the Brazilian people.
