Historical info:

The Lighthouse of Alexandria (also known as the Pharos) was the last of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World to be built but is not by any means less magnificent nor audacious; it was a huge feat of engineering on the part of it's builders & is the grandfather of all skyscrapers that dominate the world's largest cities today. Such is the significance of this wonder that even the modern city's flag bears its image

At the time of it's conception, Alexandria, located on the Mediterranean coast of Egypt, was one of the Ancient World's most cosmopolitan cities & was a center of learning & architecture. Ptolemy I, one of Alexander the Great's top subordinates, made it a priority to construct a large lighthouse for trade ships to safely sail into Alexandria's harbor at night, so it came into being.

Constructed of limestone from three sections, & rising to heights varying from 90 - 140 meters, the Lighthouse was completed in 280 BC, taking twelve years to build. Ptolemy I died in 283 BC before it's completion.

There have been two competing theories as how the beacon was powered, estimated to have a range of around 25 miles. One theory holds that mirrors were used to reflect sunlight during the day, & moonlight at night. In the latter case that depended on a clear night sky to be practical.

Another maintains that the beacon was powered by a controlled fire burned using wood in a furnace leading to the top. This was a practical solution at night when cloud cover obscured the moon.

Whatever the case, it may have been that both methods were used depending on weather conditions, as both had their advantages & disadvantages.

The Lighthouse remained in tact for a remarkably long time until from 940 AD it would be battered from a string of powerful earthquakes that hit Alexandria from the 10th to 12 centuries.

The Crete Earthquake in 1303 caused severe damage to the lighthouse ultimately, in c. 1480, in another earthquake, the lighthouse collapsed into the harbor, taking with it the secrets of it's construction.

We today only have artist's impressions & ancient writer's accounts as a glimpse of the existence if the Lighthouse of Alexandria, one that has & forever will be immortalized as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

I really wish the Lighthouse of Alexandria still existed. It would be so cool to visit.
