Minecraft - Great Ziggurat of Ur by MinecraftArchitect90 Minecraft - Great Ziggurat of Ur by MinecraftArchitect90
Something I've been working on these past few days, the Ziggurat of Ur of Ancient Sumeria.
Scale is 1:1 of the real thing.
Took three days to build, & lay the foundations.
A side-note: I'll update this build tomorrow so it'll have greater detail & some structural tweaking.

Historical Info:

Once the greatest monuments in one of history's earliest civilizations, The Great Ziggurat stood in the city of Ur, near modern-day Nasiriyah in Iraq. At the time of its construction, Ur was the capital of the Sumerian Empire ruled by the Third Dynasty of Ur. The Sumerians were amongst the first people to cultivate the lands of Mesopotamia by large-scale agriculture & irrigation, meaning crops & plants had a consistent supply of water. This is why Mesopotamia became known as 'The Cradle of Civilization' & the Sumerians were the first great powerhouse in the region.

The ziggurat was built by the founder of the Third Dynasty Ur-Nammu, & perhaps his greatest achievement was constructing a vast temple complex in what was then the new capital of the empire. The structure itself consisted of a multi-terraced layout built from sun-baked mud bricks. Stone was scarce in the region, so nearly all great works of architecture in the region were built from mud, but that did not compromise its structural strength. To add durability to the mud bricks, builders mixed the mud with sand & straw, then a basic type of mud-based stucco would be applied to keep the bricks & the gaps between other bricks watertight. The Great Ziggurat was built sometime around 2,000 BC & had served as a temple to the moon goddess Nanna-Sin, and also as an administrative center for the empire.

Despite inhabiting the region since 5,000 BC, the Sumerians came under threat from an emerging power further to the north; another great Mesopotamian civilization that will make it's mark in history; this was the powerhouse of Babylon. The Babylonians soon conquered much of the region, & they had lasted for about 1,000 years before falling to the Assyrians, only then to re-emerge again 300 years later. What we know of the Ancient Sumerians stems from various ziggurats dotted in Iraq & the discovery of clay tablets written in cuneiform.

Today only the foundations & lower sections of the Great Ziggurat remain, & recent events have placed it in even greater danger of total destruction. Time will tell if this 4,000 year-old monument will still be with us in the modern age, where civil & political unrest are rife in a region where human civilization flourished for thousands of years.

Sumerian Ziggurats? They probably should! Their Egyptian-inspired models in-game feel a little clichéd I think.

Totally! The temples in the game could totally use some work.

I also wish they'd have their own mob to guard them, like Wither Skelies in Nether Fortresses.

For thousands of years the desert encroached, and have pushed it further inland. It's an example how climate change can have an impact over millenia.
