Description

A surprise: My completely rebuilt Temple of Artemis.
Was built over three weeks straight. Was sick & now I'm stuck in snowy weather. Had lots of time to build it.
Is approx 33% bigger than predecessor. Old one has been demolished.

Historical info:

One of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, first completed c. 550 BC, The Temple of Artemis was located in Ephesus, now part of modern-day Turkey. This magnificent temple was built on honor of Artemis, the goddess of fertility & wild animals, & was the protector of virgins & young girls. Although held in high reverence throughout the Classical Greek world, she served as the patron goddess of Ephesus. Built almost entirely of marble, & with more than 100 columns, each 20 meters tall, it was a stunning architectural achievement for it's time. Construction involved some of the regions best stonemasons & carvers to exquisitely carve the columns & pediments on both ends of the temple were very labor intensive. The temple itself is built in the Ionic style which, is less common than the more popular Doric style. The key differences here are in the columns. In the Doric Order, columns are smooth and are flat on top. This made for minimalist decoration, however it is defined as more "masculine" to the Greek architect. Ionic columns are fluted, which means they are carved with smooth grooves along the column surface, making it more aesthetically appealing. Their tops are also more ornate, featuring rounded edges which are often carved with intricate details. This defines the "feminine" style of the Ionic order which never attained the popularity of the Doric style.

However it did not last long; in a wanton act of criminality, Herostratus burned the temple to the ground in c. 356 BC. His reason was that he wanted to be remembered in history for doing something "grand". So heinous was his crime that soon after anyone in Ephesus who mentioned his name was put to death under the rule of law. Legend has it that Artemis herself left the temple to assist in the birth of Alexander the Great, who would become one of history's greatest conquerors. He was born the very year the temple was destroyed.

It would be the third temple built for Artemis that would go down in history as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, being bigger than the other two before it.
Completed c. 320 BC, it was estimated to be between 2 - 4 times the size of the Parthenon in Athens, again built from the finest marble at enormous expense.
The Temple of Artemis built this time would stand for nearly 600 years, until being destroyed & looted by the Goths in 268 AD. The Goths had adopted Christianity as their religion, & the new monotheistic faith was replacing the polytheistic beliefs of Rome & Greece.

Even though pillaged by the Gothic tribes, a lot of the stone was used in the construction of other buildings chiefly in Byzantium, even some of the temple's columns was used in the construction of the Hagia Sophia.

Today only one column remains of the temple. Having suffered both natural & man-made disasters, it's scale, precision, & the dedication of it's builders rightfully earns the Temple of Artemis as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
