Minecraft - The Taj Mahal by MinecraftArchitect90 Minecraft - The Taj Mahal by MinecraftArchitect90
My newest Minecraft project: the Taj Mahal.
Took me over two weeks to build.
The dome by far was the most challenging part of construction, after so much trial & error I think I got a dome that is somewhat satisfactory. Not perfect, but good enough in my opinion.
Screenshot of the cenotaph coming next.
I will update this with further work carried out to the garden.

Historical Info:

The Taj Mahal is perhaps India's most cherished treasure, a building so magnificent that during it's existence it has captured the imagination of the world, & is the symbol of India. The story of this this monument is a story of love & tragedy.

During the thirty reign of Shah Jahan of the Mughal Empire which encompassed most of the modern countries of Pakistan & India, it was a time of unrivaled prosperity, & it's possible that the Mughal Empire was the wealthiest Empire in the world at that time. In the city of Agra, the capital of the Mughal Empire, Shah Jahan ruled the empire alongside his favourite wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who he met at the age of 15. For both, it was love at first sight.

At the age of 20, Shah Jahan married Mumtaz Mahal, & soon after, they were inseparable. She even accompanied him on the battlefield quashing rebellions; it was common for Mughal emperors to pro-actively put down rebellions personally. Despite that however, Shah Jahan's reign was one of tolerance, fair governance, & he increased trade with the rest of the world. So wealthy was the empire he built palaces of pure white marble & commissioned the arts that conveyed wealth.

However, in 1631, Mumtaz Mahal suffered complications during the birth of her fourteenth child. Shah Jahan was devastated & overcome with grief after her death. He grieves for two years, court poets wrote he isolated himself for that time, he wept continuously, even his hair turned grey, looking much older than he actually was. He renounced all court entertainments, dancers, music, & the like.

Six months after Mumtaz Mahal's death, he ordered the construction of a magnificent tomb for her body to rest in. She secured such a promise from him with her dying breath, & so for the next 20 years, he devoted himself to this massive undertaking. This monument is a prime example of Islamic architecture, as the Mughals were followers of Islam, & as such incorporated many features unique to this style of building.

Construction began in 1632 on the banks of the Yamuna River in Agra, so great was the scale of the project materials were dragged for many miles to the construction site. Clad in pure while marble mined from Rajasthan, known for it's very fine polish, the surface reflects different hues during different times of the day. It's proportions are so perfect few can match it in terms of symmetrical harmony.

Completed in 1648, it is the greatest engineering feat of the Mughal Empire, & is an eternal love poem, set in stone. Here, Shah Jahan finds solace, having fulfilled his departed wife's wish.

There was a price to be paid for this timeless expression of love; one of Shah Jahan's sons, Aurangzeb, overthrew his father & declared himself emperor. Aurangzeb imprisons his father & rules the empire with an iron fist, going as far as to revoking the policy of religious tolerance in place since the reign of Akbar the Great. That & constant Hindu & Sikh rebellions caused cracks to appear in the integrity of the empire. Aurangzeb would rule the Mughal Empire for 49 years, though his reign was that of ruthlessness; he was the opposite of his father in ever aspect. His death in 1707 marked the long, steady demise of the empire.

Today, the Taj Mahal is visited by millions of tourists every year, & is widely regarded as one of the most spended buildings on the face of the earth.

I look forward to seeing further updates. It already looks quite amazing. Though not as detailed as the LEGO set(which is far too expensive for most people's taste anyway), it is still very beautiful and a great tribute.

You're right, after all Minecraft is all blocks for one. And last I checked the Lego set is about €4,000. My car is worth that!

Hah, yeah it's a very expensive set. I've seen it go for more, in fact... And less. If you can get a used, aka opened box, set, it goes for about three-quarters to half that. A bit better anyway XD
Much less expensive to build it in Minecraft though!

Amazaing how the more simple styles are more effective.  I like this just as much as some more detailed versions.  The geometry is better here.

It's 99% finished at this stage, the missing 1% is extra detail, which I'll do a little work on. And symmetry was my main priority here, which actually went better than I expected
